Cordel Connect V3

Cordel Connect V3: Delivering advanced insights with advanced technology.

The release of V3 introduces expanded multi-modal AI detection across eleven trackside asset types, Starlink satellite backhaul for remote data transfer, and a fully integrated workflow from capture through to reporting and GIS publication.

About Cordel Connect

Cordel Connect is a cloud-based platform used to assess and manage safety inspection data. It centralises captured data captured by Cordel’s autonomous sensors, automates data processing, and supports governance and QA workflows across the inspection lifecycle. Cordel Connect is used by rail operators across Australia, the Middle East, North America, and the United Kingdom.

A platform built across every layer

V3.0 is the result of sustained development applied across the AI engine, data transfer infrastructure, and the platform’s core workflows. Each component now operates as part of a single integrated system — from the point of capture to the delivery of inspection results in customer environments.

Cordel Connect is used by rail operators to visually analyse and manage inspection data captured by Cordel’s autonomous sensors. The platform centralises data from multiple sources, automates processing, and supports governance and QA workflows across the inspection lifecycle. V3 represents the most substantial update to the platform to date, with changes at every layer of the stack.

Expanded AI detection

At the core of V3 is an updated multi-modal AI engine that processes video and 3D point cloud data simultaneously. Rather than treating each data type as a separate input, the engine correlates evidence across both streams in a single pipeline. The platform now automatically detects, classifies, and measures eleven trackside asset types — an increase on the asset coverage of earlier versions.

This expansion extends Cordel’s capability beyond Positive Train Control (PTC) requirements. Rail operators with asset monitoring obligations across a wider range of asset classes can now address more of those requirements through a single capture run and platform workflow. The expansion increases Cordel’s addressable scope within the global rail sector.

Starlink satellite backhaul

Cordel’s autonomous sensors capture approximately 350,000 km of inspection data each year. At that scale, data transfer from remote and regional corridors presents a consistent operational constraint. Many of the corridors where inspection is most critical have limited or no terrestrial mobile network coverage.

V3 addresses this with Starlink satellite backhaul, enabling up to 100 GB of inspection data to be transferred daily from remote locations. This removes the dependency on local mobile networks and supports consistent capture-to-insight turnaround times regardless of geographic location.

Cordel’s sensors operate across a wide range of environments — from the deserts of Australia and the Middle East to the severe winters of northern US states and Canada. The Starlink integration is designed to deliver reliable data transfer across all of these conditions, ensuring inspection programmes are not constrained by connectivity.

Platform enhancements

Four core capabilities have been added or extended in V3:

Network-Wide Discovery — Inspection data is immediately accessible, aligned to the client’s specific network model. Users can navigate and query data at network scale without manually reconstructing spatial context.

Data Management — Advanced AI tools are paired with human-in-the-loop assurance workflows. Automated detection is validated through structured review processes, maintaining the regulatory-grade inspection outputs that Cordel’s customers require.

Integrated Visualisation and Reporting — Analysis, visualisation, and reporting are available directly within Cordel Connect. There is no requirement to transfer data to external tools to produce deliverables or share results with stakeholders.

GIS Integration — Inspection results are published automatically to customers’ Geographical Information Systems, removing manual export steps and reducing the time between inspection completion and operational use of results.

From the CTO

Aaron Hoye, Chief Technology Officer at Cordel, commented:

“This release reflects the cumulative effect of sustained development across every layer of our platform. All of Cordel’s capabilities — from multi-modal AI analysis to Starlink-enabled data capture — are integrated into our single platform. Our customers now have a seamless workflow from capture to insight, at a scale and speed that is unmatched in the industry.”

“We have also embraced generative AI tools within our own development process. For a company of Cordel’s size, these tools are a significant force multiplier — they allow our team to deliver better capability to our customers in less time.”
